36 euros. That's what it costs to walk into the BER Lounge Tegel in Berlin. No status. No fancy credit card. Just show up and pay.
I didn't know this for years. Honestly thought airport lounge free access was reserved for people in Business Class or those with some exclusive platinum card. Turns out that's wrong. About 40% of all international travelers now use lounges during long layovers, according to market data. Most of them are flying Economy.
Here are five concrete ways to get airport lounge free access (or close to free) as a regular traveler. Some cost nothing extra, some cost a few euros. All of them are legal, tested, and current for 2026.
Quick answer: Airport lounge free access or cheap access is possible for everyone, even without Business Class or frequent flyer status. The cheapest starting point: day pass from 36 euros at BER. If you fly regularly, Priority Pass Germany or a credit card with lounge access saves more in the long run. Status Match for 99 euros is the insider tip for anyone with existing airline status at another carrier.
Way 1: Credit Card with Lounge Access
The classic approach for lounge access via credit card. Certain cards come with automatic lounge access, usually through Priority Pass or a proprietary network.
The most well-known option in Germany: The American Express Platinum Card at 720 euros per year. Sounds like a lot, but you get up to 50 free lounge visits and Priority Pass Prestige included.
Big news, though: Starting October 1, 2026, Amex Platinum cardholders will lose access to Lufthansa lounges, as reported by Frankfurtflyer. This changes the math significantly, especially if you fly mostly from Munich or Frankfurt. Worth also checking the Lufthansa baggage rules 2026 while you're at it, since MUC and FRA are both Lufthansa strongholds. Munich Terminal 2 has virtually no Priority Pass lounges. So you'd have a 720-euro card and still no lounge access at one of Germany's busiest hubs.
When does this make sense? If you fly ten or more times a year, the card pays for itself pretty quickly. Travel blogger Hagen Foehr from reiseuhu.de estimates that just four flights per year are enough to recoup the annual fee through saved meals and drinks alone.

Way 2: Buy Priority Pass Germany Directly
You don't need an expensive credit card to get a Priority Pass. You can buy one outright.
Priority Pass Germany and worldwide is the world's largest independent lounge network: over 1,900 lounges in 142 countries, 355 in Europe, and access at eleven German airports.

Standard: 89 euros per year, each visit costs 30 euros extra
Standard Plus: 289 euros per year, ten visits free, then 30 euros each
Prestige: 459 euros per year, unlimited free visits
A guest always pays 30 euros extra, regardless of tier.
For the occasional traveler, the Standard tier is probably the best bet. 89 euros base plus 30 euros per visit. Three lounge visits per year puts you at 179 euros total. Not free, but not bad either.
One thing about Munich: Terminal 2 (Lufthansa's home base) has almost no Priority Pass lounges. The options in Terminal 1 are limited – more basic provision than relaxation. Way 3: Status Match for 99 Euros
This is the insider tip that finance blogs almost never mention. The frequent flyer community has known about it for years.
Here's the catch: you need existing status with another airline – BA Silver, BA Gold, or Iberia Plus. Got that? Then you can get a Miles & More Status Match for 99 euros. That gives you Frequent Traveller or even Senator status with Lufthansa. Senator equals Star Alliance Gold, which means lounge access without business class at all Star Alliance lounges worldwide.
99 euros for a full year of lounge access (valid until end of February 2027). I know someone who flies British Airways regularly – my friend Tom, a consultant, probably eight flights a year. He did the match and now uses Lufthansa lounges in Frankfurt and Munich. For him, it's been the cheapest path to airport lounge free access by far.

Way 4: Airport Lounge Cheap with a Day Pass
No subscription, no program, no status needed. You walk up to the lounge reception and buy a day pass. Done. Some people book online in advance (usually a bit cheaper). That's it.
My tip for getting airport lounge cheap: day passes make the most sense when you have a long layover (two hours or more) and want to work, eat, or shower in peace. If your connection is under 90 minutes, you'll probably spend more time finding the lounge than relaxing in it.
Here are the actual prices at major German airports:

Berlin (BER): Two lounges with direct ticket purchase. The BER Lounge Tegel at 36 euros, and the BER Lounge Tempelhof at 48 euros. Both available without any preconditions.
Munich (MUC): Lounges from 49 euros, specifically the Airport Lounge Europe in Terminal 1. WIFI, hot food, showers. The Lounge World in the same area runs 64 to 72 euros. A bit steep.

Way 5: The Delay Trick (Requires Planning)
This way is not for control freaks. It only works when your flight is delayed – and you obviously can't plan for that. But if you fly frequently and delays are just part of the deal anyway, it's 40 euros well spent.
Under EU Regulation 261/2004, airlines must provide meals from two hours of delay on short-haul routes. How exactly is up to them. Sometimes restaurant vouchers. Sometimes snack boxes. And occasionally: lounge access.
There's also a smarter play. The Travelzoo membership program (40 euros per year) works like this: register your flight at least 24 hours in advance. If it gets delayed by one hour or more, you automatically get a QR code for free lounge access. Works at over 1,800 airports worldwide.
Is this system perfect? Honestly, no. You need to plan ahead, and there's no guarantee (no delay, no access). But if you fly a few times a year and delays are already part of your reality, 40 euros is pretty solid insurance.

Which Way Gets You Airport Lounge Free Access?
Here's the quick version, based on how often you fly:
You fly rarely (one to three times a year)? Just buy a day pass. Starting at 36 euros. Cheapest way to get lounge access without business class or any membership.
You fly regularly (four to nine times)? Priority Pass Germany Standard (89 euros plus 30 euros per visit) or look into credit cards that include lounge access. Which lounge access without business class option works best depends mostly on your home airports.
