Christmas Gifts in Hand Luggage: Security, Customs and Packing 2026

Christmas Gifts in Hand Luggage: Security, Customs and Packing 2026

Flying for Christmas rarely means just socks in your bag. Christmas gifts in hand luggage are allowed, but a wrapped box can quickly get unwrapped at security.

1

Travel unwrapped, wrap on arrival

Germany's aviation association BDL advises against wrapping gifts beforehand, as German news agency dpa reported on 12 December 2025. Zurich Airport agrees, reports travelnews.ch on 18 December 2025. Wrapped gifts aren't banned, but the German Federal Police say screeners may search your bag by hand and empty it completely.

So pack gift wrap and ribbon loose, or grab flat gift bags. Toy guns, arrows, slingshots and baseball bats are trouble anyway, dpa notes.

Packing cubes stop things rattling around:

Gifts in hand luggage or checked bag?

Expensive watches and old photos belong in your carry-on, Ryanair advises, according to a dpa report. For battery-powered toys, Germany's Federal Aviation Office also recommends the carry-on, switched off. Loose power banks are banned from checked bags; more in our power bank airplane rules.

Bigger bottles of liqueur or perfume? Suitcase. In the cabin, the 100 ml limit still applies, says the German Federal Police; see our carry-on liquid rules. Exception as of September 2026: Munich Airport has dropped it at its CT scanner lanes since 18 September 2026, per touristik aktuell on 15 September 2026. Regular lanes keep it.

Bottles are heavy. A luggage scale like the Freetoo Digitale Gepäckwaage, Tragbare Hängewaage bis 50 kg shows at home whether you're within your baggage allowance.

3

Customs on the way home: allowance for gifts

The customs allowance applies to souvenirs you bring into Germany, not to gifts you take abroad.

Returning from a non-EU country, air and sea passengers can bring goods worth up to 430 euros duty-free according to zoll.de, accessed 28.09.2026; for under-15s it's 175 euros. Above that, you declare the goods verbally, and for goods worth up to 700 euros, German customs charges a flat 17.5 percent.

Within the EU, goods for personal use are duty-free. Alcohol and tobacco have their own limits, see duty-free alcohol in hand luggage.

Checklist for your Christmas flight

  • Wrap glass and porcelain in bubble wrap, then a thick sweater, and pack it mid-suitcase, as Ryanair advises. Old-school, but clever.

  • Cookies or stollen? The rules are in food in hand luggage.

  • No present yet? Zurich Airport points to the shops after security, per travelnews.ch.

  • Keep receipts for souvenirs, as German customs advises.

  • Coming home with more? A foldable spare bag helps, for example the Faltbare Reisetasche, 2er-Set.

Wrapping under the tree is nicer anyway. So: ribbon in the bag, wrap on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you take wrapped gifts on a plane?

Yes, it isn't forbidden. But Germany's aviation association BDL advises against it, dpa reports, because suspicious packages can be opened.

Do I have to unwrap gifts at airport security?

Not automatically. If something looks suspicious, screeners may search your bag by hand and empty it completely, according to the German Federal Police.

Should gifts go in hand luggage or the suitcase?

Valuables and battery-powered toys go in hand luggage, and loose power banks always do, says the Federal Aviation Office. Liqueur or perfume over 100 ml goes in the suitcase, as regular lanes still apply the Federal Police's 100 ml limit.
