Jewelry Insurance for Travel: Protecting Valuables in Your Luggage (2026)

Jewelry Insurance for Travel: Protecting Valuables in Your Luggage (2026)

A wedding ring in the toiletry bag, a watch in the suitcase's side pocket, and some policy somewhere will cover it. That's the assumption, anyway. Look into jewelry insurance for travel and it falls apart fast: almost every policy pays far less than people expect. Some pay nothing.

1

Jewelry Insurance: How Much Does Each Policy Actually Pay?

Think your home contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) has you covered abroad? According to the consumer advice centre Verbraucherzentrale, it usually covers valuables on a trip at just 10 to 20% of the sum insured, capped at €10,000 (as of 2026), and only after a break-in at your hotel or rental. Necklace snatched on the beach? Tough luck.

Hoping travel baggage insurance does better? It doesn't, much. Finanztip reports that valuables are often covered only up to 50% of the sum insured (as of 2026), for all of them combined, not per item. On a €2,000 policy, that's €1,000 max for your ring and watch together.

Relying on your credit card cover? That's tighter still. American Express lists €500 per claim for jewelry and watches (as of 2026), and only if they were in a safe or on your person. For genuinely expensive pieces, honestly, a standalone all-risk jewelry policy is probably the only real fit.

And the airline? Since 28 December 2024, its liability for checked bags is capped at 1,519 Special Drawing Rights per passenger, roughly €1,900 to €2,000 (as of 2026), according to the ICAO. That covers the whole suitcase, and many airlines exclude jewelry in their conditions of carriage anyway. Not sure baggage insurance is worth it for you at all? Our guide to luggage insurance in 2026 walks through that decision.

Jewelry in your carry-on and at your destination

Jewelry never belongs in a checked bag. In your carry-on it stays within reach, ideally in a small case like the ProCase Reise Schmuckkästchen, Kleine Schmuckschatulle PU-Leder Aufbewahrungsbox für Ringe, Ohrringe, Halsketten, which doesn't look like it holds anything worth stealing. For the suitcase itself, a TSA-Kofferschloss mit flexiblem Kabel, Gepäckschloss für Flugreisen at least slows down opportunistic thieves.

At the hotel, the room safe beats the bedside drawer. No safe? A lockbox like the Amazon Basics Tragbarer Tresor mit Zahlenschloss für Dokumente und Schmuck, Größe XXL, Schwarz is a decent fallback. And in cities known for scooter snatch-thieves, the flashy necklace is probably better left in the room.

Before you leave, it's worth photographing each piece and storing the pictures in the cloud with the receipt or an appraisal. A photo only proves the piece existed, not what it was worth.

Our honest take on jewelry insurance? The best policy is a suitcase with no jewelry in it. The ring stays on your finger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is jewelry covered by travel baggage insurance?

Usually yes, but only up to a cap shared by all your valuables, often 50% of the sum insured. Some policies exclude jewelry completely.

Does home contents insurance cover jewelry on vacation?

Only partly: typically 10 to 20% of the sum insured, capped at €10,000, and only after a break-in at your accommodation.

Is the airline liable if my bag with jewelry goes missing?

Often not, because many airlines exclude jewelry from checked baggage. The Montreal Convention limit is 1,519 Special Drawing Rights for the whole bag.

Should I carry jewelry in my carry-on?

Yes. It stays under your control there, and some providers, American Express among them, only pay if jewelry was in a safe or on your person.
