And New Year's is probably the worst week of the year to be standing at a baggage carousel. Everyone who thought a trip over the holiday was clever is at the same station at the same time.

Vienna's Silvesterpfad isn't really a party. It's a city switched into party mode. For a New Year's city break through more than one capital, Vienna is the loudest and coldest stop. The 33rd edition drew more than 800,000 visitors into the centre across eight stages, and by around 23:40 every location had hit capacity.

A year later the count was roughly 550,000, the lowest turnout on record. The programme wasn't the reason. The cold was.

Which is the packing lesson from Vienna, before the trip has properly started. You stand outside at a thing like that for hours. Not twenty minutes. Hours. The nice jacket that looks good indoors stops mattering somewhere around half past one. I learned that in Vienna, a bit too late.

Three cities in one weekend sounds like a scramble. From what I've seen, it isn't, as long as the route cooperates. For a New Year's city break with three stops, the train connection is the actual trick, not the backpack.

Between Vienna and Prague, ÖBB lists around 20 direct trains a day, at roughly four and a half hours, with the Railjet running about every two hours. Vienna to Budapest is about two and a half hours, which barely counts as a journey.

Power for three stations

The thing that genuinely runs dry on a route like this is your phone. Timetables, tickets, maps, translation, and then the January 1st hunt for somewhere that's actually open in Budapest. Prague surprised us. Private fireworks are banned in the historic centre, and no official display was planned for New Year 2025/26 at all. Instead of bangs you get people standing on bridges, mulled wine, cold hands. I preferred it, honestly. Although I'm not sure whether that was Prague or just two nights of accumulated tiredness talking.

Wash on the road instead of packing more

Travellers on the Fodor's Travel Talk Forums have been describing this for years: one sink wash or a service wash partway through, rather than a fresh set for every day. Between Prague and Budapest we had a laundry evening. Two t-shirts, detergent strips, a radiator. Dry by morning.

One place I watch people get caught out on a New Year's city break with flight legs: they check the cabin-bag rules for the outbound flight and assume that covers the whole trip.

It doesn't. Even IATA states plainly that allowances vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft type, and that its own reference dimensions are guidance rather than a guarantee. An IATA study from 2024 explains why the guidance exists in the first place: overhead bins are often fuller than airlines planned for, which is why IATA now recommends smaller reference dimensions for cabin baggage.

Quick answer: Check the permitted cabin-bag dimensions for each flight separately. The outbound and the return can be different airlines with different limits, even inside one booking.
