Lufthansa Munich Rovaniemi: Direct Flights from 4 December 2026

Straight from the Lufthansa Group announcement:

• Start: 4 December 2026, season ending 26 March 2027

• Frequency: twice weekly, Fridays and Sundays

• Flight numbers: LH2466 out of Munich at 11:30, LH2467 back from Rovaniemi at 16:40

• Flight time: about 3 hours 20 minutes, time difference already accounted for

• Aircraft: Airbus A320neo

What no press release tells you: reisetopia.de reported in August 2026 that the start date and operating days had shifted. Nobody has confirmed that since, so check the live schedule before you book.

Because Rovaniemi is booming. Finavia, the Finnish airport operator, reported that Rovaniemi passed one million passengers for the first time in 2025 (1.1 million, to be precise), after 18.4 percent growth the year before. Petri Vuori, who runs route development there, said Finnish Lapland keeps drawing more German travellers year after year.

Munich was the last obvious gap for the Rovaniemi route in the German-speaking market. Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Vienna and Zurich already had something heading north. German trade press reads it the same way, as a first for this city pair. There are also extra frequencies to Tromsø, Kuusamo and Kittilä, adding up to as many as 69 weekly flights to nine airports in the Arctic Circle.

One distinction for your baggage: sister carrier Discover Airlines starts a weekly Munich-to-Ivalo service on 23 December 2026, but as its own airline, not as Lufthansa. For when the winter schedule as a whole kicks off, see our winter schedule 2026/2027 overview.

Good news first: an ordinary scheduled flight, not a charter package, so the usual Lufthansa checked-baggage rules apply. Per Lufthansa's own rules (as of September 2026), Economy gets you one cabin bag at 55x40x23 cm and up to 8 kg, plus a small personal item.

The catch is the checked allowance. Economy Light includes none at all, and for a winter week on the Arctic Circle that gets tight fast. Thick jacket, thermal layer, boots, gloves. In my experience most people badly underestimate how much volume winter clothing eats.

If you still want to try it carry-on only, you need a case that actually uses the full allowance, not one that's already at the limit before you've packed the winter jacket. The one I'd buy for a trip like this:

Rovaniemi sits right on the Arctic Circle. Double-digit sub-zero temperatures are normal in December, and you get daylight for a few hours.

The thing I wouldn't economise on? Socks. Not the cotton ones from your drawer, proper thermal ones. Cold feet ruin a husky tour faster than bad weather does.

Power banks belong in your cabin bag

Cold eats batteries. The phone you're planning to shoot the northern lights with will fade a lot sooner than it does at home.

The baggage rule that genuinely matters here: power banks go in your cabin bag, never in checked luggage. That isn't a Lufthansa quirk, it's an IATA requirement for lithium batteries and every airline applies it.

Whether the route survives past its first winter, I genuinely don't know. Twice weekly on a seasonal run is no sure thing. But for anyone in southern Germany or Austria, Lufthansa Munich Rovaniemi is the first Lapland connection that doesn't start with a hop to Frankfurt.
