ETIAS Delayed: The 2026 Launch Has Been Scrapped

We published two pieces on Kofferly saying ETIAS would go live this year. One said autumn. The other said the fourth quarter. Neither holds up any more. ETIAS delayed again, and the EU never actually announced it. The date just quietly vanished from the official page.
What actually happened
No press conference. No statement. Nothing.
The official ETIAS website simply dropped its old "last quarter of 2026" wording. ivisa.com documented the change on 20 July 2026, and etias.com had picked it up on 16 July 2026. The page now says only that ETIAS is "currently not in operation."
A website edit as the entire news event. Thin, I know. But that really is the whole official record.
Why ETIAS was delayed again: how EES is involved
ETIAS was never a standalone project. It sits on top of the EES border system, shares the same IT backbone, and is legally sequenced to launch only once EES runs smoothly. That is where things stalled.
EES has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, with more than 45 million border crossings registered by that point according to the European Commission. The summer that followed was rough. Euronews reported on 8 July 2026 that queues at external borders were running close to five hours at peak times. A source quoted there put the reasoning bluntly: clean up EES first, before adding a second system that doubles the line again.
What is confirmed, and what is only reported
Most coverage blurs this distinction, and I think that is where readers get misled.
Confirmed:
- According to etias.com on 16 July 2026, eu-LISA, the EU agency building the system, internally accepted that a 2026 launch was "no longer feasible." That comes from the people doing the actual engineering.
Reported, not confirmed:
A European Commission spokesperson told the Financial Times only that preparations were ongoing and that "many factors come into play" with a system this size. No date, no cause, not even the word delay.
The 2027 target is press analysis (schengentraveler.com, updated August 2026), not a confirmation. Officials don't even agree internally, since one EU figure reportedly thought the slip might be short.
Honestly, from outside there is no way to tell who is closer to right. The eu-LISA management board is expected to revisit the timeline in September 2026.
What the ETIAS delay means for your travel plans
Nothing. Genuinely nothing.
ETIAS has never operated, so there is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay (Time Out, August 2026). Visa-exempt travellers entering the Schengen Area still need exactly what they needed before, which is a valid passport. When a real launch date does arrive, the EU says it will be announced several months ahead.
Your passport is still worth keeping tidy though. EES is the digital entry and exit register that replaces the passport stamp. ETIAS is the planned travel authorisation meant to run on the same IT backbone. While EES is still struggling, ETIAS cannot be layered on top of it.
Are your older ETIAS articles wrong now?
On the launch date, yes. Both assumed Q4 2026, which the EU has since removed from its own site. The fee, the validity period, the countries covered and how the application works all still reflect what was legislated. It just has no start date attached.
