Six delays. Originally planned for 2021. And now? According to an official announcement by the EU Commission from March 2025, ETIAS should go live between October and December 2026.
After this many postponements, I think most of us are in "believe it when I see it" mode. Fair enough. But there are real reasons this timeline looks more solid than previous ones. And if you have friends or family from the US, UK, or Australia planning a trip to Europe, they should probably hear about this now.
Quick answer: ETIAS is the EU's new electronic travel authorization for visitors from 59 visa-free countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and more). Launch: Q4 2026. Cost: 20 EUR. Valid: 3 years. EU citizens don't need it.
What Is ETIAS, Exactly?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Think of it as Europe's version of the US ESTA, but with a few differences.
You fill out an online form before flying to the Schengen area. No visa appointment. No embassy visit. Ten minutes, tops. The system checks security databases in the background and gives you the green light, usually within minutes.
And to be clear: if you're an EU citizen, you don't need ETIAS. Period. This affects travelers from outside the EU who currently enter visa-free.
Who Needs ETIAS?
Citizens of 59 countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen area. The big ones:
United States, Canada, Mexico
United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand
Japan, South Korea, Singapore
Brazil, Argentina, Chile
Israel, United Arab Emirates
The official EU portal has the complete list. Over one billion travelers worldwide are affected.
Who doesn't need it? EU citizens. Germans, French, Italians, all of them exempt. Swiss nationals too (Schengen-associated).
How Much Does ETIAS Cost?
| Detail | ETIAS (EU) | ESTA (USA) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | 20 EUR | 21 USD (~19 EUR) |
| Validity | 3 years | 2 years |
| Multiple entries | Yes | Yes |
| Processing time | Minutes (typically) | Minutes (typically) |
| Under 18 / Over 70 | Free | Full price |
The fee was raised from the original 7 EUR to 20 EUR. The European travel industry called the increase "unjustified". Honestly? I think 20 EUR for three years of access to 30 countries is still a pretty good deal. That's roughly 6.67 EUR per year.
When Does ETIAS 2026 Actually Launch?
Officially: Q4 2026, sometime between October and December. The exact date? Still unknown. The EU has said they'll announce it at least six months in advance.
As of June 2026, that specific announcement hasn't come yet. But don't panic. After launch, there's a transition period:
Phase 1 (about 6 months after launch): Entry without ETIAS still possible
Phase 2 (another 6 months): First-time visitors can still enter without it
From roughly October 2027: ETIAS becomes mandatory for everyone
The German Federal Police (Bundespolizei) confirms: you can't apply for ETIAS yet, and you don't need to. If someone is offering you an ETIAS application right now, they want your money. Or your data. Probably both.
Watch Out: Fake Websites Are Already Active
This is worth saying clearly. Frontex has issued an official warning about fraudulent ETIAS sites. They charge 60 to 100 EUR, harvest personal data, and deliver nothing because the system isn't even running yet.
The only legitimate ETIAS website will end in .europa.eu. Anything else? Stay away.
EES vs. ETIAS: Don't Confuse Them
You might have noticed that a new biometric system went live at EU borders in April 2026. That's the Entry/Exit System (EES), not ETIAS.
Here's the difference:
EES = Digital border control at arrival (fingerprints, facial scan). Active since April 2026. Replaces passport stamps.
ETIAS = Pre-departure authorization. Not active yet.
Two separate systems. People mix them up constantly.
What Does This Mean for Your Travel Plans?
If you're an EU citizen traveling within Europe, nothing changes for you. But if you're expecting visitors from the US, UK, Australia, or any of the other 59 countries on the list, give them a heads-up. Starting late 2026, they'll need an approved ETIAS before boarding their flight.
And since we're at Kofferly: good travel starts with good preparation. The EU travel authorization 2026 belongs on your pre-flight checklist right next to the right hand luggage size (Coming Soon).
