Your Mallorca holiday is getting pricier in 2026. The tourist tax jumps by up to 50 percent during peak season. And as if that wasn't enough: In Sóller, rental cars can no longer enter the town centre. Sounds like stress, right?

Don't panic. With the right planning, you can still avoid headaches and save some cash.

I went through all the changes. Here's what you need to know.

What's Changing with the Mallorca Tourist Tax

The Balearics are raising the tourist tax significantly. According to ADAC, the Ecotasa (the official name for the Mallorca tourist tax) in 5-star hotels rises from 4 euros to 6 euros per person per night. This applies to peak season from June through August.

Cruise passengers face the biggest hit: from 2 euros to 6 euros. That's a 200 percent increase.

Real example: A family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers over 16) in a 4-star hotel pays for one week in July:

Year Tax per night 7 nights, 4 people
2025 €3.00 €84
2026 approx. €4.50 approx. €126

That's 42 euros more. Doesn't sound like much at first, until you realize that's two really nice dinners in Palma.

The Silver Lining: Winter Gets Cheaper

But wait - there's good news too. In January and February? No Mallorca tourist tax. Zero euros. Nada.

The government wants to boost winter tourism. If you're flexible and can travel outside peak season, you save real money here. Long stays also get a discount. After the ninth night, you pay 50 percent less. Perfect for extended holidays.

Mallorca Driving Ban: Sóller Closes Its Doors

Sóller is on most people's Mallorca must-visit list. The narrow streets, the mountain panorama - beautiful. But the Mallorca driving ban hits this popular spot from 2026: You can't drive your rental car into the centre anymore.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports: The town is setting up a low emission zone (ZBE). It covers about 70 hectares with 12 streets in the historic core. Residents can still drive. Tourists with rental cars? Park at the edge of town.

New parking areas are planned near Desvío street. From there, it's a 10 to 15 minute walk to the centre. Not the end of the world, but if you're planning to drive to Sóller and then head to the beach or mountains, factor this in.

Why All These Changes?

The reasons for the higher Mallorca tourist tax and the new traffic rules are pretty clear. The numbers tell the story: In 2023, according to Majorca Daily Bulletin, nearly 400,000 vehicles arrived through Mallorca's ports. That's 108 percent more than in 2017.

Anyone who's tried finding a parking spot in Palma in August knows exactly what I'm talking about. The city is bursting at the seams. The infrastructure can't handle it. Neither can the residents.

Higher taxes and driving restrictions aim to reduce mass tourism. Will it work? I have my doubts. But I get why they're trying.

V-16 Warning Light: What Rental Car Drivers Need to Know

Almost forgot: The Mallorca tourist tax is just one part of the 2026 changes. You should also know about technical requirements like the V-16 warning light.

From January 1, 2026, vehicles registered in Spain must carry a V-16 warning light. The traditional warning triangle is history.

Most rental cars in Mallorca have Spanish plates. According to Mallorca Magic, the rental company is responsible for providing it. But ask at check-in anyway. The fine is 80 euros.

Making the Best of It

The Mallorca tourist tax and the new traffic rules sound restrictive at first. But they're here now. So what can you actually do to make your holiday relaxing anyway?

Winter instead of summer: The tourist tax 2026 disappears completely in January and February. If you're flexible, you save real money here and enjoy the island without tourist masses.

Use public transport: In Sóller and other areas with driving bans, you often get around better by bus or tram than by car. The historic tram from Sóller to Port de Sóller is an experience in itself anyway.

Plan a longer stay: From the ninth night onwards, you only pay half the Mallorca tourist tax. Perfect for workations or extended autumn holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

The higher rates are planned for April 2026. However, the Balearic Parliament still needs to approve them. The ruling PP party doesn't have a majority.

The Mallorca tourist tax in peak season (June to August) is up to 6 euros per person per night in 5-star hotels. Less during shoulder season. Nothing at all in January and February.

From 2026, not into the centre. The Mallorca driving ban applies to all rental cars in the low emission zone. The town is setting up parking areas at the edge. From there, you continue on foot or by bike.

The rental company must provide it. Ask at check-in. Without a V-16, you risk an 80 euro fine.

Absolutely. The island is still beautiful - a few extra euros don't change that. Sure, the higher costs are annoying. But they're manageable. And if you're flexible and travel in winter, you actually pay less than before.
