Five weekly flights to Cape Town, nearly daily service to Rio, and Nairobi becoming a daily destination. Lufthansa just made a serious push on its Frankfurt long-haul network for summer 2026. If you've been eyeing a trip to South Africa, Brazil, or Kenya, your options got a lot better.
One thing worth knowing before you book: the cheapest ticket comes with zero checked luggage. More on that in a second.
New Lufthansa Long-Haul Routes from Frankfurt
According to the official Lufthansa Group press release, the airline will operate over 14,000 weekly connections to 330 destinations across roughly 100 countries this summer. The schedule data from AeroRoutes breaks down the Frankfurt changes:

Cape Town and Rio basically doubled from three to five or six weekly flights. Nairobi goes up in stages: six flights from May, daily from July 6. Trondheim is a brand new route, never served from Frankfurt before.
All three long-haul routes operate on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Per Aero.de, ten new aircraft of this type join the fleet by summer 2026.
Allegris Business Class Now on All Three Routes
If you're booking Lufthansa long-haul in business class, these three routes now come with the new Allegris cabin. Good news if you fly up front: Cape Town, Rio and Nairobi all get the new product. The Allegris Business Class seats became bookable on April 15. That means 28 business seats in a 1-2-1 layout, every seat with direct aisle access, and up to 220 cm of sleeping space.
As FrankfurtFlyer reports, Frankfurt now beats Munich on Allegris routes: 13 long-haul destinations vs. 8.
Baggage Rules for Lufthansa Long-Haul: Watch the Economy Light Trap
Here's the part travelers miss all the time. Baggage allowance at Lufthansa depends entirely on your fare class. And Economy Light, the cheapest option, has a nasty surprise:

Sounds absurd, but that's how it works. Based on the current Lufthansa baggage rules, here's the breakdown:

You always get a personal item (40x30x10 cm) that fits under the seat too.
Flying to Cape Town or Nairobi with no checked bag? You'll need a very well-packed carry-on suitcase (Coming Soon). For two weeks in South Africa, that's probably going to be tight. Better option: book Economy Classic from the start, or add a bag online before you get to the airport. It's cheaper that way.

What the New Routes Cost
Lufthansa long-haul isn't cheap, but more frequencies mean more flexibility on dates. Rough Economy prices as of July 2026 (fluctuate by date):
Frankfurt to Nairobi: from around 544 EUR
Frankfurt to Cape Town: from around 697 EUR
Frankfurt to Rio de Janeiro: from around 759 EUR
More weekly flights means more flexibility on dates. Five flights per week to Cape Town instead of three gives you a much better shot at finding reasonable fares.
Miles & More members should also note that Nairobi and Cape Town are solid award redemption options. With daily Nairobi service from July, finding available award seats becomes more realistic.
