Hamburg Airport baggage drop: 22 hybrid counters planned

Hamburg Airport baggage drop: 22 hybrid counters planned

Hamburg Airport plans to convert 22 of its 90 check-in counters to hybrid operation, according to its announcement dated 1 October 2026. Airlines would be able to switch these counters between staffed check-in and automated bag drop.

Hamburg Airport baggage drop: For your trip, the existing service is what matters first. Your airline must participate in self bag drop, you'll need a boarding pass, and you must meet its baggage acceptance deadline. The retrofit announcement alone doesn't tell you which counter will be available for your departure.

1

What the hybrid counters would change

The plan allocates 14 hybrid counters to Terminal 1 and eight to Terminal 2, with investment of roughly €1.7 million (airport release dated 1 October 2026). It uses existing counter space. The airline chooses how a counter operates; passengers won't simply pick either mode for themselves.

Changing the counter software isn't enough. In the same release, Mirjam Fröhlich, head of terminal and baggage management, explains that the baggage conveyor controls also need changes, alongside extra light barriers. There is work behind the belt as well as on the screen.

These planned hybrid counters are separate from the fixed machines already available. The self bag drop page, accessed 12 October 2026, lists 30 machines: 20 in Terminal 1 and ten in Terminal 2. Automated bag drop itself isn't new at Hamburg.

How the existing bag drop works

Online check-in doesn't include handing over your suitcase. The airport's check-in overview, accessed 12 October 2026, lists online check-in separately from the facilities at the airport.

The self bag drop instructions, accessed 12 October 2026, require a boarding pass first. You print the airline baggage tag and attach it to your bag. At the drop-off machine, you put the bag on the belt, scan the tag and step back. You'll then receive a receipt to keep.

If your suitcase later goes missing or arrives damaged, our guide to lost luggage rights and deadlines explains the next steps.

The airport excludes tax-refund baggage and oversized items from automated drop-off. For unusual luggage, including items with straps or loops, its special baggage guidance, accessed 12 October 2026 and your airline are the useful starting points.

Your booked allowance still matters. Our guides to Lufthansa checked baggage and Eurowings carry-on rules help distinguish the bag you hand over from the one you take into the cabin.

An overweight suitcase is a separate issue. The overview of airline overweight baggage fees helps you prepare; your airline supplies the exact charge. A counter conversion doesn't establish a new baggage allowance.

No firm completion date

The project announcement dated 1 October 2026 gives no specific completion date for the hybrid counters. Its reference to 2026/27 concerns the wider HAM Upgrade programme, not a promised deadline for this retrofit.

Turkish Airlines and Wizz Air were expected to join the self bag drop system "in the coming weeks", according to the same release dated 1 October 2026. Neither appears on the published airline list, accessed 12 October 2026. That's the list's status, not proof of what happens on every flight. Before travelling, a direct check with your airline can confirm availability and the bag-drop deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hybrid counter at Hamburg Airport?

A converted check-in counter would offer staffed check-in or automated bag drop according to the airline's needs. The airline chooses the operating mode.

When will the hybrid counters be finished?

The project announcement gives no specific completion date. The wider modernisation programme's timeframe isn't a promised deadline for the counter conversion.

Can every passenger use self bag drop?

No. Your airline must participate, and you'll need a boarding pass. The existing automated service excludes tax-refund and oversized baggage. Your airline's baggage acceptance deadline still applies.
