According to the German Airport Association (ADV), German airports expect around 225 million passengers in 2026. That's 4.2% more than 2025. And Easter falls on April 3-6 this year. Right before the spring break peak.
Here's the problem: The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) goes fully live on April 9. Four days after Easter Sunday. Controls are still being rolled out. I saw the new scanners at Munich last week. Takes longer than expected.

Easter Travel Chaos Days: When Will It Be Worst?

Good Friday, April 3: First wave. Families start their Easter holidays.
Saturday, April 4: Peak traffic. Everyone wants to leave.

Easter Monday, April 6: Return wave begins.
What I'd do? If you have flexibility, fly on Tuesday or Wednesday before Easter. Or after April 10. Prices are often lower too.
Frankfurt vs. Munich: Where to Expect the Most Chaos?
Frankfurt is Germany's largest airport. And that's exactly where Easter 2026 travel will get tough.
Why? The new Terminal 3 in Frankfurt opens on April 22. Two weeks after Easter. During the holidays, they're still in testing phase. Means: Security checkpoints in Terminal 1 have to handle 30% more people. I was there last month - even without Easter rush, lines reached back to the escalators.
Munich did better. Munich Airport handled over 395,000 passengers in a single Easter weekend. Airport wait times stayed manageable thanks to modernized security checkpoints.
If you have a choice: Munich is probably the more relaxed option for Easter 2026 travel.
Easter 2026 Travel: How Early at the Airport?
The old two-hour rule? Forget it for Easter. Doesn't work.
Experts recommend arriving 30-60 minutes earlier than usual during peak travel periods. For Easter 2026 travel, that means:

Step 1: Check the airline app. Often you can rebook directly without standing in line.
Step 2: For delays over 3 hours, you may be entitled to compensation. Up to 600 euros depending on distance. Document everything.
Step 3: If you have to overnight at the airport: Most major airports have lounges with day passes. Expensive, but better than sleeping on the floor.
