Carnival 2026 runs from February 12-17. Here's what you need to know:
Weiberfastnacht (Women's Carnival): February 12 (street carnival starts)
Carnival Sunday: February 15
Rosenmontag (Rose Monday): February 16 (main event)
Veilchendienstag (Shrove Tuesday): February 17
The Cologne Rose Monday parade starts at 10:00 AM. Dusseldorf traditionally kicks off at 12:22 PM.

The warning has a reason. Pickpockets during carnival days work in teams using distraction tactics. One person bumps into you while their partner reaches into your jacket pocket.

Rain Poncho for February Weather
February in Cologne brings 7-10 rainy days on average and 78mm of precipitation. Temperatures range between 1 and 6 degrees Celsius. Snow is possible too.
Rose Monday 2024 was 4 degrees with drizzle. 2023, Cologne got lucky: 8 degrees and dry. But I wouldn't count on that.
An umbrella? Forget it. Try holding one for six hours in a crowd while confetti flies around you and people dance. Good luck.

Six hours standing by the roadside at 3 degrees. Your fingers will feel it. Gloves alone often aren't enough.

Water Bottle Due to Glass Ban
In Dusseldorf, there's a strict glass ban in the old town on Women's Carnival, Carnival Sunday, and Rose Monday. Getting caught with glass bottles means up to a 60 euro fine. Cologne has similar rules in certain areas.
The enforcement is serious. In 2024, Dusseldorf issued over 200 violations. Officers patrol not just the old town but also the parade routes and transit stops.
PET bottles and cans are allowed. Better yet: a reusable water bottle.

Here's what nobody has on their packing list: ear protection.
Confetti cannons blast at 141 decibels, balloons popping right by your ear hit 134 dB. For comparison: a jet engine at takeoff is around 130 dB. So you're basically standing between jet engines.
Hearing damage risk starts at 85 dB. Ear protection is especially important for children. But adults celebrating all day in the crowds should think about earplugs too.

Carnival Cologne vs. Carnival Dusseldorf 2026
I get asked this often: Cologne or Dusseldorf?
Carnival Cologne 2026 is bigger. Way bigger. Over 1.5 million people at the 2024 Rose Monday parade. The economic impact is massive. 850 million euros in revenue per carnival season.
Carnival Dusseldorf 2026 is a bit more manageable but just as crazy.
A word about the carnival chants: In Cologne you shout "Alaaf!", in Dusseldorf it's "Helau!"
Don't mix them up. Shouting "Alaaf!" as a Cologne supporter in Dusseldorf is about as smart as yelling "Hello Deutschland" in Munich. People will stare. Not kindly.
Getting There: Use Public Transit
The city of Dusseldorf recommends public transportation since city centers are largely closed off. Same goes for Cologne.
Parking? You can forget it. City centers are blocked, the few parking spots are taken, and even if you find one, you'll sit in traffic until midnight afterward.
Train or hotel within walking distance. There are practically no other options. If you're flying in, check beforehand what you can bring in carry-on luggage (Coming Soon).
Don't forget: cash. Sounds old-fashioned, but toilets cost about 1 euro. The investment is worth it. You don't want to know the alternative.
