I was standing at the baggage carousel last week watching a suitcase crash onto the floor from about six feet up. The owner next to me went pale. The suitcase? A cheap ABS model that cost 35 euros. The wheels were destroyed.

96 euros extra for a suitcase that was "too big". On a return flight between London and Budapest. More than the ticket itself cost.

Almost every trolley clears 55 cm in height. The 40 cm width too. But 23 cm of depth including wheels and handles rules out a large share of the cases sold on Amazon as "cabin approved". Anything designed for Ryanair or easyJet is built to 25 cm.

Ryanair allows 55x40x20 cm with Priority. Lufthansa allows 55x40x23 cm. easyJet allows 56x45x25 cm for its large cabin bag. Air France allows 55x35x25 cm. A case that uses the full easyJet allowance is 5 cm too deep for Ryanair and 10 cm too wide for Air France. At the same time.

55 euros at the gate. For a bag that flew perfectly fine on Lufthansa. On the return flight with Ryanair? Suddenly it didn't fit anymore. The difference? 3 centimeters.
